Many historical events are obscure because the material isn’t available in English, or because it is a topic generally not discussed. A broad historical consciousness is needed, so that we may develop a broader, more complete understanding of our own position in this world, and the events that sjaped the world.
Manchu Qing History
The last Imperial Dynasty of China was ruled by the Manchu people. Their decisions and policies shaped more than two centuries of Chinese and Asian history, and we are still feeling the impact of their Empire today. It would be remiss to not know about them.
Chinese Islamic History
Great swaths of China have been and are heavily shaped by Chinese Muslim hands, and have been for centuries. Without proper knowledge of the Chinese Islamic frontier, one can hardly understand current Chinese policies regarding Islam.
Century of Humiliation
From the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, China was in a weakened state that allowed foreign powers such as France, Germany, Russia, and Japan, to ravish China with impunity. This century is crucial to understanding China today.
Overseas Chinese History
Chinese diaspora has been all over the world. Their experiences often reflect the zeitgeist of their host countries, and in most cases, Chinese diaspora faced persecution and deportation. We must ask ourselves why, and what we can do to prevent a repeat of history?
Thoughts and Religion in China
Not just the history of events are important, but the history of the mind arguably much more so. How did Chinese or Manchus think about the world and how did they look at certain topics? We should strive to understand and break away from Western paradigms.
Chinese History
Chinese history is the source of Chinese culture. Chinese language, festivals, traditions and customs are soaked in the waters of the past. If the past is unknown, you will be unable to grasp the significance of Chinese culture. Therefore, to understand Chinese history is to understand China and its culture.
